Today I arrived home from work to find three new plants, which Stephen and I ordered to replace some of the unfortunate souls who didn't make it through the winter.
We chose dwarf cotoneaster (Cotoneaster adpressus 'Lil Gem'), which Stephen had already unpacked from the box.
I retrieved my favorite shovel, which has endured the entire decade I've lived (and gardened) in Washington Heights. I've searched for replacements, but I haven't found one that has the exact size and shape of this one, which is ideal for me. (I regretted that I dented the tip last year while trying to wedge a brick out of the path.)
I also regretted that I was wearing (new) light khaki pants, which is never a good idea when gardening.
But I went ahead with it anyway, and soon the plants were in their new homes, where presumably in a few years they will look less like little shrubs and will cascade over the rock faces. In the fall they will have red berries and in the spring they will have tiny white flowers, tinged with pink. (Cross your fingers!)
Here's a shot of the path from the front of the garden, which gives you a better sense of what's blooming as we head into late April: phlox, azalea, tree peonies and some lil white flower the name of which escapes me right now. So far it's been a good spring -- let's hope it lasts for a little while longer.
