Remember how almost a year ago I published a book about opera and love and immortality (and okay, cats) called The Metropolis Case? I can hardly remember it, either, but good news: the paperback is out today (or tomorrow), depending when you read this. In any case, the paperback is out November 8, 2011.
Maybe because the vast majority of books I've read in my life have been paperbacks, it was an unexpected thrill to get my advance copies. The way they bend in your hands, the matte finish of the cover, even the smell -- it was a moment when all of the angst (and writing is a LOT of angst, as I and probably every other writer in the history of civilization can attest) seemed worth it.
For all of you book-club folks, there's also a "Reading Guide" inside with a list of question written by yours truly to get the discussion rolling. I've sat in on a bunch of reading groups for the book, and they've all been a lot of fun, particularly those where beer and/or brownies were involved (which is to say, all of them): so what I'm saying is if you're in the vicinity, feel free to get in touch and maybe we can work something out.)
Finally, if you've never poked around the web site for the book, I recommend it. (It was designed by Stephen, so I'm not just self-promoting here, or not just entirely.) There are a ton of awesome music videos, links to reviews, LINKS TO BUY (ahem), photographs of the locations, and other cool stuff to satisfy all of your multimedia cravings. (No spoilers, either!). I wrote the book with the hope to bring readers into any number of worlds that I have loved over the years, and the actual songs and images fill out these landscapes in ways that words can only begin to describe.
Congratulations, Matthew! The paperback is my favorite reading technology.
